There is a subtle shift that has taken place in the dynamics of conversation that is grounded in the leveling of the playing field that took place during the social media revolution. The effects of which are still yet to be realized in their entirety. But the shift is so great that if you fail to adjust, you could become irrelevant quicker than you ever thought possible.

It doesn’t matter how compelling your idea is.
It doesn’t matter how much money you spend on creating a marketing campaign.
It doesn’t matter how important you think you are or how much you think I need what you have.

Without trust…or as Seth Godin says it…permission…you’re on mute. That means you can talk as loud as you want, be as creative as you want, spend as much money as you want…and it won’t matter. Why? Because with trust, I simply have you on mute. That means I can’t hear you.

I can’t think of a better example of a brand, company, or person trying to communicate without first earning trust than this classic line from Rush Hour.
