That’s a great example of spontaneous generosity. My brother’s church, Real Life Christian Church in Chesapeake, VA did this back in January (http://real-life-online.blogspot.com/2010/01/wrap-from-sunday-january-18-2010.html and http://real-life-online.blogspot.com/2010/01/wrap-from-sunday-january-24-2010.html). Forefront Christian Church in Virginia Beach coordinated this effort and they collected additional shoes from some student clubs at a couple local high schools and ended up with close to 1,200 pairs of shoes that were sent to Haiti. It’s amazing what people are willing to do when confronted with a need and a vision of how they can personally help in an effort that seems to big to make a difference.
Jody, That’s amazing. I love it when God’s people live life with open hands. That’s what generosity is all about.
Blessings, Ben.
That is awesome!
We are preaching on tithing this weekend at my church. At the end of the service, after the tithe is taken up, we are passing out envelopes with a fifty dollar bill in it. With the rules for taking it. The rules are; 1: You must bless a mom with this money. (not yours) 2: You can not tithe or give it back to the church. 3: You can combine the money with other people. 4: Tell us your experiences.
What is cool about the timing of this is we are teaching about tithing this week, mother’s day is next week, and next week we are teaching about Generosity. And the church is equipping the congregation to be the hands and feet of Christ.
I love reading about other church’s ideas on how to practically teach giving and generosity. Please keep sharing the stories you collect!
Amen, Mark! Thanks for “breaking the silence” and talking to God’s people about what the Bible has to say about money. I love the generosity exercise you have described, and the series you have planned seems right on time, too.
I love hearing from church leaders who are courageous enough to challenge followers of Christ to move to deeper levels of engagement and commitment. Thank you for what you do.
Many blessings, Ben.
